Well, here it is. One of the earliest bootleg releases of this Winterland audience tape. Zeppelin is incredibly powerful. Almost frightening. Jimmy Page's guitar screams and Robert Plant's vocals screams louder. These early days in Zeppelin's career are difficult to beat. Four years later, they play Kezar Stadium in San Francisco & sound like an entirely different band.

The April 1969 San Francisco stint could be considered their early triumph. This performance at the Winterland is often overshadowed as it's sandwiched between two dates in which superior recordings exist (esp. the oft-bootlegged excellent FM b'cast AKA 'soundboard' recording of the 27th at the Fillmore). But, it's this rather neglected Winterland recording that has the special treat: the encore and probably earliest live performance of 'Whole Lotta Love' to appear on tape. Zeppelin's official website claims this is, indeed, the first live performance: http://www.ledzeppelin.com/show/april-26-1969

Robert Plant jokes about the use of the newly acquired tambourine needed to perform the song. I believe the song, being so new, was not performed the next night at the Fillmore because the band, aware that the show was to be recorded for
radio broadcast, felt the song was not ready for prime time at the moment. Or, the band didn't want an FM radio quality version of their upcoming single to be available. Either way, this Winterland recording provides a rare glimpse at a rock and roll classic in it's embryonic stage.

razy is the fact that this Black Swan bootleg release neglects to mention the song, at all. It's the highlight of the recording, and doesn't get listed on the back cover. Not that you can tell, as they chose sepia-toned artwork with brown text, making the setlist all but unreadable. Superb front cover photo, though, so I can forgive them.

notes:
Here is one of the finest sounding audience recordings of Pink Floyd ever made, although the performance is rather average, arguably. Recorded by the late Mike Millard, most likely on a Nakamichi stereo cassette deck with two high-quality AKG mics. I assume this is probably sourced from a 1st gen or very very low gen source, as it is supposed to be the case that no digital transfer of Mike's masters are known to exist, as far as this recording goes, not sure about other recordings he may have done for other bands.

As many of you probably know, Millard liked to "mark" a lot of his tapes, to track who might have traded certain tapes to whomever. Also, presumably in an effort to see who might have given his recordings to bootleg labels. I am unsure if this bootleg is another marked copy that I haven't come across previously or if Sigma kind of botched this one. I won't get into all the different markings that may exist because I honestly don't know all of them but I will note a few things about this one.

- This has the "Mike Test" at the beginning of the recording, like NK's 1st gen>DAT and a supposed 1st gen>Hi-Fi that I have, which are basically identical to each other, so I doubt that's it's Hi-Fi lineage is correct. Some versions out there do not have this into.

- The 1st tape flip that occurs during HAC at 02:10 into the song has been "fixed" so continuity is not broken, probably patched with another part of the song. This is very well done. All of the Millard sources miss the verse "We're just knocked out, we heard about the sell out, you gotta get an album out, you owe it to the people, we're so happy we can hardly count" as it occurs during the tape flip.

- However, after the flip, on this source, this tape seems to entirely miss the line "...it's a helluva start" and sloppily goes right into "...made into a monster". It's jarring and sounds terrible and does not happen on any other source I've come across. Not sure if this is a marking or some sort of screw up on the part of Sigma. Not sure how they missed this one or what they did that eliminated that line. When they patched the tape flip how did they not notice this part? I have included a short audio sample of the original so you can hear what I'm talking about before I fixed it.

- The 2nd tape flip occurs at 05:00 into ACYL. Nothing was done to really fix this section like the flip in HAC but they did manage to blend the transition between the flip nicely.

- At the very end of the tape, after Echoes and right after Dave's farewell, there is a quick fade out and then it comes back for the remainder of the applause. I have not seen this on any of the other versions I have. I've included an audio sample of this portion and a screenshot so you can see what I mean before I fixed it. Right around the 22:21 mark I patched in a short segment from NK's 1st gen>DAT to eliminate the short fade and continue the applause unbroken without missing anything.

- I included a short audio sample of the Reeling source at the very end of the tape and a screenshot of what appears to be a marking. You can clearly see a small patch during the applause followed by a female voice saying "thank you very much". To me this is clearly not part of the original recording. It is also worth noting the Reeling source does not have the "Mike Test" either.

So, I used NK's 1st gen>DAT for both patches. I tried to EQ match and level adjust the patches best I could to make it sound seamless and natural to the Sigma remastering. Sounds prettygood to me and basically salvaged this release IMO. There is also a bunch of tics that seem inherent to most versions of this show that I have, mostly in the left channel and during quiter parts. I went through and removed as many as I could find. If you find any leftover it is purely your imagination

This recording has been released many many times by fans and bootleg labels. So, here's another one for you to add to your collection if you're so inclined. I like the job Sigma did here because it sounds quite natural to me and this is my preferred remaster to listen to, so it was worth it to me to fix these problem areas. Hope you like it.

While trolling youtube I came across a cool video about Mike Millard and his recording practices, some of you may find this pretty interesting...

5) Shine On You Crazy Diamond Parts 6 & 7 (Cuts Out, Cut, Incomplete Song)

Notes:
An excellent sounding recording and performance from the band in front of a very respectful audience (no fireworks, and loud excessive crowd/taper commentary on this recording).

The tape does however suffer from a very bizarre issue where all the instruments (except the vocals) come in up front and well defined. It's like the band is playing for the audience on one stage, and Gilmour is playing on another off in the distance.

The recording is also sadly incomplete, it's missing some of the beginning of "Sheep", "and Shine On You Crazy Diamond Parts 1-5", "Shine On You Crazy Diamond Parts 6-9" cuts out, and is incomplete, and the encore "Money" is missing.

The goal of this project was to bring out more of the vocals, and create more of a balanced sound to the recording in both instruments and venue presence and ambience. We felt that the raw tape had too much top end and brightness to it instead of a more balanced sound to it, so we did our best to try and not so much bring it down, but even it out, and play along with the other instruments.

We also corrected major issues that affected the recording, such as the index spaces and clicks in between tracks, also the tape speed was off, originally running way too fast. We've corrected all of these issues to the best of our abilities.

This is superb footage filmed from the audience with a great zoom, on a tripod. The only major cut is during the ending of Brighton Rock for a tape change, and most of Another One Bites The Dust is missing as a result.

Before Killer Queen, Freddie plays the intro to Death On Two Legs - the last time he would do this.

After the medley, he says, "I think our first night last night was really good. It's nice to come back to Sydney after nine years." He pours some water on the audience, and adds, "Take that. You can beat me up afterwards."

Before the usual vocal exchange with the audience, Freddie engages them: "Let's do something that's not on any of the albums right now; okay, that means you. Let's see what you're made of."

Brian, before Is This The World We Created: "We'd like to dedicate this to all of you good Sydney people who made us very at home our last few nights here." After the song, he says, "It's getting pretty warm up here. It's gonna be warmer by the time we finish. This goes back a long way to the last time we were with you, in fact, to around A Night At The Opera. Those times. And it goes like this." He plays the ever familiar guitar intro to launch Love Of My Life.

This legendary last concert tour, Brothers in Arms, which, as it turned out, was indeed the last, because Mark disbanded the group in 1988 and full of concerts was no more. Of course in 1990 there was a reunion, but this is another story, as they say.

During the concert, the group gives $ 50,000 to charity, sings together with the audience their folk song Waltzing Mathilda. Guitarist Jack Sonny walks barefoot around the stage and shoots everything that's happening on the camera. Mark and Sonny walk with a "duck's gait," as Chuck Barry did. The final concert - everyone is happy, having fun.

In addition to the concert itself, there are additional materials on the DVD-before and after the concert, interviews, etc.

Good video quality for TV recording, and the sound is just wonderful (see below). Everything is as accessible as possible at the moment. Extras. Information : The sound in this DVD is available from three different sources:

1. Stereo AC3 of the FM Simulcast
2. Uncompressed Stereo 48kHz PCM wave of the FM Simulcast
3. Original Mono soundtrack from the TV broadcast in AC3 format (different microphone mix to the FM stereo version).

On the first track you need to switch, when you see additional materials, unfortunately in lpcm they are not represented. Quality : SATRip Format : DVD Video Video codec : MPEG2 Video : PAL 4: 3 (720x576) VBR Audio : LinearPCM, 2 ch, 48Khz, 16 bits & AC3, 2 ch, 48Khz, 16 bits
